What is the difference between all the different R. J. Corman companies?
- Many Parts, One Source - R. J. Corman is the One Source service provider for all facets of railroading. Although we are made up of several entities, our individual companies come together to form a custom package to respond to our customers’ unique needs. All companies and service groups are unified under one R. J. Corman banner and adhere to the same set of core values in order to provide consistent, high-quality solutions for our customers. The R. J. Corman Railroad Company manages all of our various short line railroads across our network.
What information is needed by R. J. Corman to facilitate conversations on my rail project?
- Every project is unique, but generally the information outlined in our list of Rail Questions will help the conversation. Please be prepared to discuss answers to as many of these questions as possible.
Can I ship containerized (“intermodal”) shipments directly to/from my property?
- Rail intermodal shipments involve the transport of shipping containers between established intermodal terminals. Due to the complexities of the intermodal networks, intermodal shipments are generally not picked up or delivered by freight railroads directly at a customer’s facility. These shipments will generally go through a dedicated rail intermodal facility with trucks providing transport to/from a customer’s facility. Our team is happy to discuss this with you in more detail and direct you to the right resources to help find a solution.
What options exist for rail service if I don’t have direct rail access at my property?
- If it is not feasible to connect your property to an R. J. Corman line, our team can work with you to determine if there are nearby transloading, warehousing, or cross-docking options that might meet your needs.
- Transloading is the process of "transferring the load" of products from one mode of transportation to another. R. J. Corman specializes in creating custom solutions for our clients. Click here to see a basic overview on how transloading could work for you.
How does R. J. Corman get my railcars if they don’t connect to the origin/destination facility?
- Freight railroads in North America create an interconnected and integrated system allowing the seamless transport of railcars between various rail service providers through established “interchange” locations. R. J. Corman’s system of short line railroads connects to multiple Class I railroad partners, ensuring that our customers receive the benefit of long-haul transportation by the Class I freight railroads and the excellent customer service that our customers have come to expect from our various short lines.
- Our Industrial Development can discuss our Class I connections with you in more detail. Additionally, interchange locations and partners are shown on our Network Map and on Our Short Lines page.
